Moving from Executive Coaching to Borderless Coaching

PrintIn recent years executive coaching has morphed into one of the most powerful tools for leadership development transformation in the 21st Century. Just at the point where the corporate leader has come to her wit’s end, has reached deadlock or indeed feels that she has reached the pinnacle point of no return; along comes the Coach to remind her of who she is; pointing towards what else; what’s more; what’s possible from here.

Executive Coaching is delivering great bottom line results, with organisations validating the critical value that coaching can play in transforming mediocre managers into high performing leaders that enhance competitive advantage across every functional area and industry sector. Executive coaching provides a compelling vehicle to support the growth and development of leaders and increasingly a core element of comprehensive leadership development and talent management processes in organisations.

At the ripe age of twenty, according to the Global Coaching Survey, there are 47,500 professional coaches worldwide operating across four continents in 162 countries. We see the first recognition of diversity in that although the genesis of the coaching industry began with a generic framework, it has evolved to include a wide variety of niche communities specialising in Women Returners; Fatherhood; Adolescent Teens; Rainbow Pride; Cultural Competency; Death, Dying and Legacy to name a few.

The coaching client is also transforming, diversifying in complexity, needs, wants and expectations. These clients are also responding to an ever changing and increasingly volatile, unpredictable, complex and murky world. Yet workplace surveys (Blessing White; Difference Works), indicate that they have a keen focus on remaining grounded in the meaning of what they do; who they want to be; the values they want to live; the legacy they are compelled to leave; determined to lead from a place of authenticity; valued for who they are, grounded in their authenticity.

As a consequence the discerning client wants a tailored approach; cookie cutter coaching is quickly snuffed out.

I ended my coaching relationship after two sessions realising that I needed a coach who really got me, someone who understood, connected and valued with who I am- as a female Moslem doctor with extended family and care responsibilities. That’s what coaching the whole person means to me “
